Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday or Carnival, is a day of feasting and celebration that begins after the Christian day of Epiphany and culminates on Ash Wednesday. The holiday dates back thousands of years to the Roman festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia. But more than just a Christian holiday, Mardi Gras has become over time a cultural phenomenon.
As its name suggests, Mardi Gras, which is French for “Fat Tuesday,” is traditionally a day to indulge in fatty foods before the upcoming period of fasting for Lent. Nowadays Mardi Gras is celebrated, at least here in the US, with more than just rich food. Colorful parades, masks, and raucous parties are all part of the holiday tradition.
Down in New Orleans, Mardi Gras reigns supreme; so much so that New Orleans and Mardi Gras are practically synonymous. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate on March 5, that’s where you’ll want to go, although many major cities in the States have parades and festivities of their own.

The first Mardi Gras celebration in the United States took place in New Orleans way back in 1699. Over the years, the event evolved from a small party of rowdy Frenchmen to the enormous festival it is today. The first recorded parade took place in 1837, and the tradition continues. Today, Louisiana is the only state to recognize Mardi Gras an official holiday.
To help get you in the Mardi Gras spirit, we’ve rounded up a number of unique and celebratory carnival tattoos. The traditional Mardi Gras colors, at least in New Orleans, are green, gold, and purple. Venetian masks that mimic the old carnival style and beaded necklaces are the two most defining features of the event. Below are some examples of lavish tattoos that sum up the Mardi Gras aesthetic.
